Problem

Air pollution is a silent threat, responsible for over 2.5 million deaths each year. Yet most people rely on weather cues or guesswork, often unsure if the air around them is truly safe.

Solution

I created AirWise, an app that turns complex air quality and health data into clear, personalized guidance. By combining real-time location data with individual health insights, AirWise helps people make confident daily choices and protect their well-being.

The main purpose of AirWise is to help individuals make informed decisions that positively affect their well-being by integrating weather, air quality, and personalized health insights.
This app serves two key purposes:

- Health Optimization:

AirWise is a proactive health management tool. It combines real-time environmental data with personalized health insights from Oura to empower users to optimize their daily routines and engage in activities that align with their health goals.

- Environmental Awareness:

The app provides precise and localized information about weather conditions and air quality to enhance users' awareness of their surroundings. This awareness allows individuals to make conscious choices that promote a healthier and more balanced lifestyle.

Field Analysis

For this project, I explored the relationship between air quality and personal health. I began by studying the fundamentals of air pollution—identifying key pollutants, their risks, and how the Air Quality Index (AQI) translates exposure into an accessible scale for users.

I also examined the influence of weather conditions on air quality. While people often assume that poor weather equals poor air, my research revealed no direct correlation between the two. This insight guided my design decisions, leading me to prioritize pollution data over weather cues when framing health-related recommendations.

To personalize the experience, I studied the Oura Ring and the health metrics it tracks — such as sleep quality, recovery, activity, and readiness. These parameters provided a foundation for connecting a user’s daily health data with environmental factors.

The design challenge was to bring these three data sources together:

Oura Ring health data – individual responses and trends

Air quality levels – real-time AQI and pollutant data

Weather forecasts – context for planning activities

By integrating these inputs, I created a framework for delivering personalized, actionable insights. For example:

Alerting users when poor air quality may affect recovery or sleep.

Suggesting the best times to be outdoors, exercise, open windows based on both activity readiness and/or pollution forecasts.

Helping users understand how environmental factors influence their well-being over time.

Competitive Analysis

Based on a comparative analysis, both websites have many similar features. However, the Health parameters feature, which connects each user with personalized health insights, is missing. This unique integration sets AirWise apart as it provides users with a comprehensive understanding of how environmental factors impact their health. This enables them to make informed decisions about their daily activities.

Qualitative Research

A survey with 20 respondents was conducted to examine users' attitudes towards air pollution. It aimed to explore their thoughts and concerns about how air pollution impacts their daily lives, as well as gather insights into their expectations for the application being developed to address this issue.

A survey with 20 respondents was conducted to examine users' attitudes towards air pollution. It aimed to explore their thoughts and concerns about how air pollution impacts their daily lives, as well as gather insights into their expectations for the application being developed to address this issue.

- Not everyone is aware of pollutants and their effects on human health. The majority of the respondents expressed a desire to increase their awareness of air pollution.

- The user wants to know what actions should be taken in case of high/moderate levels of air pollutants.

- The user avoids polluted areas or prefers to stay indoors to protect himself from pollutants.

- The best weather for the user is good air quality and clear skies moderate temperature and humidity and calm winds.

- Season and time of the day are the factors that have an impact on a user's decision to go outside.

- The user wants to get personalized information based on air conditions and health.

Onboarding & Core Experience

The journey starts with onboarding: users register, connect their Oura Ring, and allow access to the OpenWeather API. This setup ensures personal health data and environmental conditions work seamlessly together.

From user research, I learned that people often struggle to link air quality data to real lifestyle choices.

To solve this, I designed the MVP around four pages.

The Home Page serves as a personal dashboard with tailored recommendations, key health metrics, AQI levels, location-based data, and a 7-day forecast.
The Air Quality Page adds depth, showing pollutant charts, their health impacts, and who is most at risk. The Settings Page gives users control over notifications, while the Q&A Page offers clear explanations and guidance.

By focusing on these four pages, the app turns complex data into practical, everyday insights.
